JA T3 Template Framework 2.0 for Joomla!

Written by Dinh Viet Hung

JA T3 framework is a third generation template framework developed by JoomlArt for Joomla! 1.5 and above.  It brings with it a new file/folder structure, new features and lots of improvements.

The major new features shipping with the T3 Framework:

  • Modular code makes the template light, fast, yet extremely powerful.
  • An advanced navigation system - an upgrade of the popular Megamenu, which soars above other menu systems with additional classes, menu item descriptions and slogan lines, and even override options added right inside the template menu system.
  • Multiple layout system - layouts are built in blocks, each having distinctive styling and module positions.
  • Mobile Ready - device detection capabilities implemented right inside framework making your website mobile-ready for devices such as Blackberry, Android, Palm, Windows Mobile and also iPhone devices.
  • Native RTL (right-to-left) support powered by ingenious code which switches not only text-direction but also the template's styling.
  • Multi-themes & User theme suppport

So what exactly can this new T3 V2 framework help you to develop a good Joomla template?
Let's join Hung Dinh with his talk on this exciting topic.

In his Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit keynote entitled "How to Prevent Community: Making Sure Your Pond Stays Small", Josh Berkus, PostgreSQL Experts CEO, suggested that you cannot have too much legalese to prevent community - the longer and more complex, the better. In a fun way, this illustrates that in the open source world legal aspects are often seen as hindrances. The bad reputation of legalese may be deserved, but this talk will try to show that it is also unnecessary. Legal aspects can be a positive tool for open source collaborative community building just like other tools in the toolkit of community managers and leaders. Using three examples, the idea is to show that sufficient legal coverage can be achieved in a way that is more understandable and better suits community needs. Do you think legal aspects are always a hindrance? This talk will try to change your mind.

The jSeblod team (Sébastien & Alexandre on site) introduces jSeblod CCK, the first Content Construction Kit integrated to Joomla and compatible with all its extensions.

jSeblod CCK is a very powerful and flexible tool for creating and managing very complex websites, such as real estate websites, recruitment websites, editorial websites... jSeblod CCK, still little known to the general public, is revolutionizing the world of Joomla extensions, it already inspires major players in the Joomla community.

The major features of jSeblod CCK will be set out, such as the management of content types, fields, templates, search engines, users...

Innovation is the leitmotiv of jSeblod, the new major developments for 2010 will also be revealed...

Joomla! goes iPhone

Written by Wolfgang Disch
Wolfgang Disch presents "jPhone One", a component and a templte which displays content from your Joomla! site on iPhone. The component is made up of iPhone-optimized code including the iUI-Library of Joe Hewitt. This library helps the website to emulate a native iPhone App by using Javascript and CSS. Its goal is simply to turn ordinary standards-based HTML into a polished, usable interface that maps to iPhone interface conventions. You know from standard Apps the sliding pages, a header with Back-button and a menu, which is able to reload items using AJAX.

Non-Profit, what's cooking South and North

Written by Matthew Philogene
Case Study:
Challenges of developing Non-Profit / Government websites in Southern Africa vs Europe
They say less is more. Tell that to African people, they know all about it. Non-profit organisations struggle with the same statement, they need good-looking, effective websites.
Can they afford it? Of course yes! We'll show you how eventually Africa and Joomla! can come up with sites that are as good and even better than the European websites...
We will be looking at African websites and Belgian based websites. These all have high traffic (600GB per month for one), user interaction, plenty of customization both design and template, several languages and lots of articles. We will cover the following in the presentation: Communication challenges, Client wants vs Client needs, Challenges of the technical elements added to the site, Why these organisations use open source systems, Why we have chosen to use Joomla as a Tools for developing websites, What we would like to see for the future of Joomla.
And of course some images so you can see the examples of what we have worked with...

Rebuilding the newsletter extension MkPostman

Written by Mandy Butschke
Mandy Butschke rebuild the newsletter extension MkPostman as her master thesis work. The completely new developed extensions focused on improved usability and legal requirements for sending out mass mailings within Germany. During her talk Mandy will introduce the basic concepts and introduce the technical as well as functional background of the component itself. As lead developer she will summarize with a look into the future of the component and may be even compare it with other newsletter services.

Valanx.org logoWith tens of thousands of registered users and even more websites that have AEC deployed, the circuitously named Account Expiration Control Component has been source of surprise and frustration. Ranging from: This functionality? As Free Software? (And, more recently: At this price?) to the realization that a lot of functionality comes with quite a burden to configure it, we have done our best to keep up with our own userbase.

However, around 2009, it became apparent that a rewrite was inevitable - breaking up the software and offering more managable and flexible pieces from the big, monolithic component that AEC has grown to be.

The first part of the talk will be devoted to giving you an idea of the component, what it can do and where its limitations are. Not to dwell on the past for too long, but until the rewritten version is done, we are confident that a lot of users will still be interested in what AEC actually is.

The second part will deal with the future of Valanx - our plans of restructuring AEC and, fingers crossed, beta versions of work in progress that we will have totally done by May 31st. No really!

If you don't know yet:

AEC LogoThe Free Software (commercial GPL) AEC component allows you to offer paid memberships on your website. It integrates with major components (it ships with more than 50 plugins) and supports more than 40 payment processors. Especially the flexibility of conducting other components has proven to be invaluable for AEC users.

Apart from that, it offers a wide range of standard e-commerce features - Integration with your registration process, Shopping Cart functionality, Discount Coupons and Im- and Export helpers.

If you are curious, you can already learn a bit about AEC in our Online Tour.

David DeutschDo you love to write software, but sometimes cannot get rid of the feeling that you are going nuts? Bonkers? Stark raving mad?

You are not alone! In fact, there is a very good chance that there is a person trying to out-do you in a lot of ways - some of which you would not (or, indeed, could not) even have thought of.

That person is David Deutsch and in this 22 hour talk (or 22 minutes - depending how fast you feel compelled to leave the room) he will run you through the twists and turns of being a self-employed Free Software developer. Having dealt with the full spectrum of insanities (only stopping short of installing a laser on the moon), he will have valuable information on managing your largely boundary-free work life and the even less bounded demands that your users might have on your time.

Themes include "How to start, even when lacking formal education, business interest or intent", "How to build and maintain a habit of shipping software, also: getting up in the morning", "Building an easy-access information storage to support your brain when it's gone fishing" and "11 Incredible Mind Tricks: Lifehacking to free yourself from any productivity you used to have".

Joomla! to Infinity and Beyond

Written by Johan Janssens
A lot has been said about the development of Joomla! since the day it was born. The story goes back years, spans continents, and includes a cast of thousands. It's a fantastic story, with all of your standard themes — greed, rage, turmoil, love lost. But mostly it's a story of dedicated people laboring to create something they truly believe in.

In this session we will bring you this story. Our journey will start on the 17th of August 2005 and continue past the many successes but also the many challenges faced. You'll hear about the day Joomla was born, the release of 1.0 and the road to 1.5.

You will learn about the struggles that were fought, the price that was paid and the successes achieved.  Joomla success represents the sum total of the energy expended by thousands of people around the world for almost a decade.

We will take a look at the future of Joomla. The development of 1.6 and the many innovations Joomla developers are working on outside of the core.

Finally I will share with you my dreams and ideas how we together can take Joomla to infinity … and beyond !
