In his Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit keynote entitled "How to Prevent Community: Making Sure Your Pond Stays Small", Josh Berkus, PostgreSQL Experts CEO, suggested that you cannot have too much legalese to prevent community - the longer and more complex, the better. In a fun way, this illustrates that in the open source world legal aspects are often seen as hindrances. The bad reputation of legalese may be deserved, but this talk will try to show that it is also unnecessary. Legal aspects can be a positive tool for open source collaborative community building just like other tools in the toolkit of community managers and leaders. Using three examples, the idea is to show that sufficient legal coverage can be achieved in a way that is more understandable and better suits community needs. Do you think legal aspects are always a hindrance? This talk will try to change your mind.
